5 Surefire Ways to Give Your IT Guy A Headache

We are in a new age of business where technology is everything. If you are a business owner or in a position of leadership, it is imperative that the business tech is kept up to par. But many of us do prefer to do many things ourselves these days, even if we might not be best suited to do that. If this is a bit over your head or if you want to make sure the job is done right, your best bet is to hire an IT professional. Avoid these five mistakes to help your IT guy keep your business a well-oiled machine.

Purchasing Hardware Without Consulting Them

IT guys know the proper hardware install to make sure everything works well together. Take, for example, in-house printer servers. All printers and computers are not compatible with every server. If you run ahead and purchase any of these parts, you could be making a mistake that the IT guy then has to fix. Buying attachments or replacing parts entirely will add to the IT guy’s load and take time away from more critical tasks.

Trying to Set Up A Network by Yourself

IT pros know the technology that you as a business owner may not know how to apply. Setting up a network may seem simple, but there is a lot of equipment and jargon involved. If your primary concern is money, you may go for hardware that is not powerful enough to handle the needs of your business or that may continuously have problems. Instead of trying to set the network up yourself and then have a pro fix potential damage afterward, you would be better off allowing the IT guy to make sure your system is set up correctly from the beginning.

Not Googling The Problem

IT pros appreciate being informed of severe issues, but they do not enjoy being contacted for every little hiccup. Sometimes a problem with a computer is as simple as restarting it after leaving it on all week or knowing the difference between turning on the monitor and the computer. It may seem simple, but sometimes business owners and employees are so scared to solve an issue that they miss apparent solutions. A simple Google search can help you find a quick answer or at least give a better explanation of the problem to your IT guy.

Failing to Have Offsite Backups

Many business owners do not know the importance of keeping files backed up in a safe location away from the office. You never know what may happen to your office, so if your IT professional suggests having offsite backup, take it seriously and put a plan in place under their guidance. This will prevent massive data loss and keep backup storage if something needs to be retrieved later.

Downloading Third-Party Software

No matter how “legit” it may seem, it is never a good idea to install software or extensions to your business computers. Talk to your IT guy first so they can screen the software and avoid security issues and computer crashes from iffy software.

Your business depends on your technology running properly, so make sure you don’t wing this. If you are in need of IT support, check out our services here, or give us a call.
